10,000 Hits and Winter Grays

You've seen what our place looks like in the fall. In the winter, it is completely opposite. We sat our little house down right in the middle of the forest, daring the builders to cut unnecessarily even a single sapling. As a result, twenty-one years later, we can look out any window and see trees in every direction. From several of our windows, we can eve reach out and touch a tree. So there's plenty to study from during every season.

I like the light patterns and how they change from early morning through sundown. Sometimes they can be stunning, at other times they're almost undetectably subtle. All that within the winter grays is what I want to capture before the spring greens start appearing.

This little scene is at the edge of our property, alongside the road where the afternoon sun makes a direct hit. People talk about the dull, gray winters but the more I study our winter woods, the more colors and variations I see. Here, especially, the trees in the four o'clock sun were nothing short of amazing.

In other news, during the past several hours, this blog hit the 10,000 hits milestone. I started blogging in February, 2008, not so long ago as blogging goes, so I feel like having received 10,000 hits is not bad for a newbie. Hopefully in another year, we can see those numbers multiply.

Thanks to all of you who've kept coming back as well as to those of you who are here for the first time.

Dianne, I think 10,000 in less than a year is great! I'm impressed. Your painting impresses me too.

We have a house in your part of the country too, so when I get homesick for it, I just tune in to your blog.

Dianne, the description of your property sounds like mine. Our lot is filled with trees and I have painted a lot of landscapes with trees.
I will be watching for more color on days like today.....foggy!

Carol, 10,000 certainly pleases me, just enough to get greedy :).

Peggy, the color is there alright, but oddly, I didn't really see it until I started painting it.

Traffic comes to blogs that have interest and yours certainly does. Congratulations on the numbers, it can only go up from here!

I too live in the woods and have trees everywhere. There is never a shortage of painting fodder. I just need to get better at landscapes!

I love the colours in this winter scene. You know there's life in those trees! We don't have woods like yours around here and nothing ever gets that cold, so it's so exciting watching the progress of 'your' woods through the seasons.

Well done on your big 10!

We are about to build our house on a property with LOTS of trees and I will be like you, daring anyone to cut a single branch unnecessarily. I may even plant a few more!
I really like the format of this piece - shows off the height of the trees. Lovely vertical feeling!

Congrats on the 10,000 mark. I know I keep coming back for more and you never disappoint. I love the size of this painting - really sets it off nicely.

Thanks, Jeanette. And I love the company.

Thanks, Liz. We really love our woods. And they are a joy to paint.

Anita. Good for you! One of our crusades has been save every tree we can. So many of them get claimed by storms, desease and natural forces that we intend to protect every healthy one we can.

Better watch those builders, though. They don't seem to have the same standard for saving trees as we do.

Thanks, Karen. I enjoy your visits and comments.

don't know about other areas of the world, but in Arkansas trees around the house equals all kinds of critters (mice, squirells in the attic, SPIDERS). Our new house is fairly clear, so I know I won't miss the SPIDERS...

Absolutely beautiful grays, Dianne.

Diane, this is a gorgeous painting. I clicked on something and saw it larger and beautifully saturated.

I really like this one; the greys and pinks make a very peaceful mood coupled with the scale of the tree.
