Finally, the sun came out and, at last, I saw what I was looking for--how the sunlight reflects off the leaves in that particular spot at that time of the morning. It took only a few strokes. Can you believe it! I've waited for three days just for a few strokes! It was almost a letdown. Well, not so much a letdown as a surprise. I hadn't really calculated what I was looking for.
Perhaps I'm beginning to learn to be a painter. There was a time when I would have calculated and would have guessed what was there. I would have intellectualized the process rather than responding to it. It's a joyful feeling today to realize that I waited to see it so that I could respond to what I was seeing rather than intellectualize it and "know" I was right. I honestly didn't realize that was what I was doing.
What a fantastic Christmas gift!

Awesome...thank you for sharing.
WOW, Dianne, this little guy is stunning. And I love what you describe as your AHa moment...it really is true that artists never quit learning.
Manpolo, Thanks.
Thanks, Vickie. Glad you like him. You are right and I am convinced that the artist never stops learning. Those who do make dead paintings.
Excellent! Both the painting and the insight. I love that you share your process with us, Dianne.
What a wonderful experience you had with this painting, responding rather than intellectualizing. Such a painterly scene and a joy to view. I also enjoyed the last squirrel painting and especially the drawing of Susie.
There certainly is life in your paintings. It's very cool to read about your experience.
Your animal paintings are awesome, Diane!
He's gorgeous Dianne. I get so much from you experienced artists through the blogs, and your response/ intellectualise story makes me realise yet another thing about the process of painting. Thank you.
Thanks, Susan. Sometimes I think the process is just as much fun as the act itself.
Thanks, Ann. This jar into consciousness of responding vs. intellectualizing has got my head going. Perhaps next weekend's "Compose" blog's topic.
Thanks, Dar. You know, I think the best complement of all is to be told a painting is alive.
Thanks, Jean. Guess it's just my fascination with the rest of earth's critters.
Thanks, Liz. Like in music, one of the joys of art is that there is always someone to learn from.
Are you shooting them to have stuffed for the pose?
This is another neat painting Dianne. Really like it.
Merry Christmas!!!
Ha, Bill. Not likely around here.
Glad you like this one and Merry Christmas to you, too.
Hi Diane,
I love the spirit you caught in this painting- the intent search for food. =) That's great.
